There are two major kinds of Virtual Private Network technology available under TCP/IP v4:

  1. IPSec VPN
  2. SSL VPN

You will also find PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol). This protocol has come under criticism for several security weaknesses.

Cisco VPN Client on Mac OS X

I used version 4.9.01 (0100) on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), and it worked most of the time. The Cisco client installation is quite invasive. I am looking for an Open Source Cisco-compatible VPN client that does not require a kext (kernel extension) to be installed...

Note: if you receive an "Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem" (for example, when on a Wireless network), you may have to restart the CiscoVPN subsystem. Open a terminal, and enter the following command:

 sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN

I found this solution on http://www.anders.com/cms/192/CiscoVPN/Error.51:.Unable.to.communicate.with
