HOWTO Use Google Analytics for Twitter tracking
From Consultancy.EdVoncken.NET
Twitter postings, or Tweets, can contain URLs. These URLs can be tagged so they can be tracked in Google Analytics. For example:
http://consultancy.edvoncken.net/index.php/?utm_source=twitter&utm_media=twitter&utm_campaign=ER20100128
As you can see, 3 parameters have been added to the URL:
- utm_source=twitter
- I set this to 'twitter'. You can identify the search engine, newsletter name or other source here.
- utm_medium=twitter
- For Twitter, I set the medium to 'twitter'. Other options include 'email', 'web', 'cpc' (Cost per Click, AdWords) etc.
- utm_campaign=ER20100128
- Identifies your campaign. In this example, I use a code based on author (twitter account) and date the tweet was posted.
You can use the Google Analytics URL Builder to help you add these parameters.
If you think that the resulting URL too long, just use one of the available URL Shorteners. Personally, I would recommend setting up a URL Shortening service on your own domain. This way, the resulting URLs still contain your domain name. For example,
http://edvoncken.net/0d
