Adblock Plus
Of course people need to make money to run their websites. But on most sites, all those popups, flashing ads and banners take longer to download than the actual content on the page.
So I'm using Adblock Plus with a couple of filter list subscriptions that reduce these annoyances to an acceptable level.
- EasyList (USA)
- EasyPrivacy + Cedrics Liste
- Dutchblock

NoScript
Javascript, when used properly, can enhance your browsing experience tremendously - just think of all the AJAX ("Web 2.0") sites like GMail. Unfortunately, scripting can be abused to hijack your browser.
I decided to install NoScript, which takes a "whitelist" approach - you have to explicitly allow scripting on each individual site. Whitelisting can seem annoying at first, but it is the only proper way to do this type of filtering.
NoScript also blocks certain types of plugins (for example, Flash) on untrusted websites.
1Password
Not really a dedicated Firefox extension, but part of the 1Password software available on Mac OS X. It helps me remember passwords and other login information, it can fill forms with one or more "Identities" that you have set up, and lots more. The nice part is, that you can use multiple browsers (for example, Firefox and Safari) while 1Password keeps all the information in sync.
