Content is king

All the Analytics in the world won't do you any good if your website sucks... No amount of SEO will fix that.

Setup

Setting up Google Analytics for your website(s) is fairly straightforward:

  1. Sign up at http://google.com/analytics with a Google account.
You will receive a tracking code for use on your website.
  2. Add the appropriate Javascript code to your website(s).
  3. Enter the UA-12345678-9 tracking code in your Javascript / plugin / extension.

You should verify (for example, by using View Source in your browser) that the correct Javascript code is included near the end of each webpage. Wait for about 24 hours, then log on to Google Analytics (click the "Access Analytics" button) to view your first visitor data.

For more information, check out "Conversion University" on the GA website or read the Google Analytics Blog. For basic GA concepts, read Accounts and Profiles.

URL Tagging

By adding the proper tags to your URL, you can track traffic from a variety of sources:

Advanced Segments

Advanced Segments allow you to create separate reports for, say, Social Media traffic:

  • Source
  • Matches Regular Expression
